Paul Buttigieg, Clinical Psychologist

I have been in private practice since 2006 and I work with adults and couples. I see clients with a broad range of difficulties and my clinical areas of interest include; Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Substance use and Personality disorders. Over the years, I have trained in different therapies and Mindfulness provides an overarching framework to my therapy practice. Since 2010, I have been working two days a week running mindfulness and interpersonally based therapy groups at Abbotsford Private Hospital – an acute inpatient and outpatient facility. I am involved in the Intensive Day hospital Therapy Program and we run disorder specific groups in: Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, and Substance Abuse.

I have a long history of practice in meditation and mindfulness and first began meditation training as a psychology student in the mid 1980s. I practice insight-based meditations and I attend Meditation Retreats as part of my ongoing meditation practice and personal development. I have received training from Prof. Mark Williams, one of the founders of MBCT and I attended a five day MBCT Retreat conducted by Prof Williams. I have also received extensive training in MBCT from Ms Liana Taylor, Clinical Psychologist and Director of the Meditation Centre in South Australia and Dr Ron Siegel, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, and author of the best-selling book, The Mindfulness Solution: Every Day Practices for Everyday Problems. I facilitate a Mindfulness based supervision group that meets monthly and is attended by mental health practitioners. We begin our meetings with a meditation, and we discuss clinical cases and journal articles relating to the application of mindfulness to clinical practice. I also regularly provide supervision to psychologists for specialist title registration and for trainee mental health students on clinical placement. Before working in private practice, I worked at: Student Counselling Service at a University in Perth; Western Australian Health Department in Community Mental Health; Community Alcohol and Other Drug Service; and Department of Family and Children’s Services, Child Protection.

I have always been interested in ongoing professional development and I have undertaken ongoing training in Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Schema Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
