Therapist Workshops

Paul and I have been providing professional supervision and training in Mindfulness-Based Therapy since 2010. Shown below are a number professional training programs we have developed for suitably qualified and AHPRA registered (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) mental health professionals. The 2-day Integrating Mindfulness Workshop we delivered to Youthlink workers in 2015. Over the past 5-years we have delivered MBCT professional training courses to clinical psychologists, psychologists, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers and other allied health professionals employed in the government and private sector. Our workshops are designed to conform to the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA) continuing professional development requirements, and include a significant “active” component.

Full days:  Saturday October 7 and October 21

Half-days: November 4 and November 25

This workshop runs over 3-days and is a professional development program run by Mark Craigie for AHPRA registered mental health professionals and university masters/PhD level post-grad mental health students interested in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). It is for clinicians considering running MBCT or similar mindfulness-based group programs in mental health or related settings, and wish to be introduced to the fundamental ideas, practices, materials, and processes. The workshop is run over two Saturday’s (9 am to 430 pm) a fortnight apart, with two follow-up mini-workshops to further refine skills (Saturday: 9 am to 1230 pm). The training consists of a total of 19 hours of CPD. Numbers are limited – min of 9 to a max of 12 attendees. The course is open to appropriately registered mental health professionals who have some prior experience with mindfulness interventions (e.g., MBCT/MBSR/DBT), have their own formal mindfulness practice, and experience in the delivery of psychological interventions for mental health. Some basic understanding and experience of the psychological theory of depression and cognitive-behavioural therapy principles is also highly recommended.

In the workshop, we will explore:

  • The key ideas, theory, and practices of MBCT.
  • Structure of MBCT and what you will need to know and gain further experience about.
  • How to effectively teach mindfulness concepts and meditations to your clients.
  • Specific ideas, skills, and core competencies involved in an MBCT program.
  • Demonstration and coaching of key MBCT practices and exercises.
  • How to establish and maintain a “safe and effective” group therapy environment for participants.
  • How to prepare yourself for running an MBCT group.
  • The pathways towards building your competencies for facilitating a group.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice in small groups, the key activities and meditations involved in an MBCT program. Learning occurs in a supportive environment, with participants receiving relevant coaching and feedback. A comprehensive manual and a copy of the power point slides are provided. Cost: $770 (incl GST). Contact Mark at mc.mindfulnesswa@gmail.com to register your interest and get onto the contact email list to register for payment. I can send you an application form that will require outlining your experience and qualifications in mental health, and your current AHPRA registration details.

Recommended Pre-Reading: For those attending the training, I suggest you do a bit of background reading about MBCT if you are unfamiliar with MBCT. The book depository on-line is probably the cheapest source of mindfulness books. As a minimum obtain a copy of:

  • Mindfulness a Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World, by Williams and Penman (2011) – Green cover book that comes with free CD about $20 on-line at Book Depository.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy: Distinctive Features (2017, 2nd Ed), by Rebecca Crane. Paperback version is $29 at Book Depository.

Optional References:

  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression: A New Approach to Preventing Relapse (2012), by Segal, Williams and Teasdale. This is the official manual for MBCT. It is worth obtaining if you keen to get all the detail on MBCT.
  • The Mindful Way Workbook: An 8-Week Program to Free Yourself from Depression and Emotional Distress (2014), by Teasdale, Williams, and Segal. The official workbook is also very handy.

Disclaimer and Conditions: please note that attendance and completion of the above workshops is not an endorsement by the workshop facilitators of the attendees competencies in the area of professional practice being taught in the respective workshop. Mindfulness Meditation Resources

Prior to attending the Foundation in Mindfulness Course, it is important that you obtain some mindfulness practice CDs to use over the duration of the course. We recommend as a first choice that you obtain your own copy ofMindfulness a Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World, by Williams and Penman (2011). A second option is, The Mindful Way Workbook: An 8-Week Program to Free Yourself from Depression and Emotional Distress (2014), by Teasdale, Williams, and Segal. The official workbook. Both of these books an be purchased on-line. We have also seen copies available at “The Bodhi Tree” Book Cafe on Oxford St in Mt Hawthorn (T: 94449884) for $35. They both come with a MBCT meditation CD. The are both very good texts for someone beginning to practice mindfulness and contains a wealth of detailed instructions about mindfulness meditation. Finally, you can listen to free web-based meditations at http://franticworld.com/

Alternatively, you may wish to obtain copies of the official MBCT CDs for your own practice, especially if you intend to conduct MBCT groups according to the official protocol and longer mindfulness practices. The CDs can be purchased on-line Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre. Website: www.octc.co.uk. “A set of five CDs used in Oxford’s Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy program by Mark Williams et al.” can be ordered on-line at this website.
